American democracy is separately "under assault" from President Donald Trump and Russian Federation, the former US intelligence chief warned Sunday, expressing dismay over the abrupt firing of Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey amid a probe into Moscow's meddling in USA elections and possible ties with the Trump campaign.
"The truth is the dismissal of Director Comey is part of a much longer pattern of this administration's interfering with or removing the people who are in a position to conduct an independent investigation of the president and his administration", said Senator Schumer. "You know, look, it's politics". "In light of the varied and divergent statements from the White House press briefing room regarding the firing of both former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn and the former FBI Director James Comey, the production of such tapes would allow the facts of these terminations to come to light", Krishnamoorthi wrote in a letter to White House last morning.
"It's beyond being a hypocrite".
Ari Fleischer, press secretary for President George W. Bush, unleashed a tweet storm of his own Friday declaring "a pox on everyone'e house", criticizing Trump, Comey, the media coverage, and Democrats who called for Comey's ouster themselves but now criticize Trump for having done so.
Mr Comey reportedly learned of his sacking after seeing a breaking news alert at an event in which he was speaking. He's viewed even senior advisers suspiciously, including Bannon and Priebus, when stories about internal White House drama land in the press. They have argued that the White House's explanation - that Comey was terminated due to his handling over the Clinton investigation - meant Trump could have fired him months ago.
Trump abruptly fired Comey on Tuesday and later said Comey was a "showboat" and "grandstander" who was not doing a good job, drawing a firestorm of criticism.
"That's, frankly, offensive", Spicer said. "Congressional investigators should certainly subpoena Trump-Comey tapes".
"We have got to make sure that these tapes, if they exist, don't mysteriously disappear", Warner said, adding that he hopes to have Comey testify in a public hearing before his committee. "He can hire and fire whoever he wants", Haley said. Again Trump entertained the idea of getting rid of the press briefings. "I've talked to the president". Comey also says it made him feel "mildly nauseous" to think his actions in October might have influenced the election outcome.
When the White House's defense of the move failed to meet his ever-changing expectations, Trump tried to take over himself. Multiple officials, including Pence, said the president was acting at the behest of Rosenstein and Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
May 16, 2017: A person familiar with the situation tells The Associated Press that Comey wrote a memo after the February 14 meeting with the president that said Trump had asked him to shut down the FBI investigation into Flynn.
May 12, 2017: Trump tweets that Comey "better hope that there are no "tapes" of our conversations before he starts leaking to the press!"
"In fact when I made a decision to just do it, I said to myself, I said you know, this Russian Federation thing with Trump and Russian Federation is a made-up story, it's an excuse by the Democrats for having lost an election that they should have won", he said. The person had seen the memo but was not authorized to discuss it by name and spoke on condition of anonymity. "I'm uncomfortable with the timing of all this, and that's why I think an independent prosecutor should be on the team if, in fact, the Select Committee and the House can not get their answers".
