The main question is whether Wal-Mart is executing fast enough in the face of Amazon's momentum, and especially as Amazon's pending acquisition of Whole Foods (WFM) provides it with a significant footprint in the offline, retail space. It also has a partnership with Nordstrom. Since the start of 2017, Walmart.com has unveiled two-day free shipping with no membership fee, extra discounts for picking up orders in stores and easy ordering online and in stores. Bonobos CEO and founder Andy Dunn will report to Marc Lore, the CEO of Walmart's us online operations.
Andy Dunn, Bonobos' founder and CEO, who is now taking on the role of senior vice president of digital consumer brands for Walmart US ecommerce, told Business Insider he was "extremely anxious" about how the news of the acquisition would go over. Lore added that Dunn will help "shape the future" of Walmart and the "future of retail". Somehow, both brands landed big punches today: while Amazon just announced it'll purchase Whole Foods for $13.7 billion, Walmart's making a big bet on menswear. And in March, Walmart announced that it had purchased ModCloth, an online seller of women's clothing and accessories that targets customers looking for full sizes.
It appears Walmart's emphasis on clothing and e-commerce does little to impress investors against Amazon's technological gains and expansion into new industries, such as its latest grocery play. "He and I will now leverage our combined know-how and, with the biggest company in the world behind us, take on creating the leading vertical e-commerce platform".
"Think about the expertise these teams inherently bring, " Jariwala said.
Be Civil - It's OK to have a difference in opinion but there's no need to be a jerk.
That knowledge is also being drawn upon to benefit the entire e-commerce network. Walmart won't sell Bonobos apparel in its stores, but will continue to offer it on Bonobos.com and possibly on Jet.com. In 2011 Bonobos extended offline, launching Bonobos Guideshops, e-commerce stores that deliver personalized, one-to-one service to those wanting to experience the brand in person.
Walmart has made it clear that the brands will continue as standalone sites, and executives from those companies have sought to ensure loyal customers that little will change.
Technology news website Recode reported in April that Wal-Mart was in advanced talks to buy Bonobos and that the company generated $100 million to $150 million in annual revenue.
