While it remains unclear exactly what was in the package or if the delegation had diplomatic immunity, there has been growing wariness around North Korean baggage and shipments since the poisoning of leader Kim Jong-un's half-brother at a Malaysian airport in February.
North Korea claimed on Sunday that the United States recently mugged its delegation carrying a diplomatic package in NY, calling on Washington to provide an explanation on what it calls a provocation.
North Korea says delegates it sent to a United Nations' conference in NY were "literally mugged" by USA authorities as they tried to leave John F. Kennedy International Airport on Friday.
A U.S. Department of Homeland Security spokesman says its officers seized multiple media items and packages from three North Korean citizens.
"The package in question had no diplomatic protection from inspection", said Lapan, adding that North Koreans attempted to physically retrieve the items but were prevented from doing so by DHS officers. "The U.S. owes the (North Korea) a good explanation of its act of infringement upon the sovereignty of the (North Korea) and an official apology on behalf of the U.S. government".
"Whether or not the North Korean account is entirely accurate, their treatment of American student Otto Warmbier takes away North Korea's right to complain about anything", King said.
"This clearly shows that the U.S.is a felonious and lawless gangster state", the statement read.
This week's talks take place as tensions between the USA and the North rose further following the release of a long-detained American college student, Otto Warmbier, and revelations he had been detained in the North for more than a year even after he fell into a coma.
The incident comes as US-North Korea tensions have spiked over Pyongyang's pursuit of nuclear weapons and numerous missile tests this year.
North Korea did not detail the contents of the package.
"Besides, North Korea is known the world over for using diplomatic pouches for illicit smuggling".
He was subsequently sentenced to 15 years of hard labour on charges of committing the "hostile act" of stealing a political poster from a wall in his hotel.
"Diplomats of a sovereign state are being robbed of a diplomatic package in the middle of NY where the headquarters of the United Nations is located and that serves as the venue for worldwide meetings including the United Nations General Assembly", the spokesman said.
The 22-year-old was returned to the U.S. in a long-term coma, which the North said was due to botulism and sleeping pills.
