The fugitives then crashed the auto on Interstate 24 and fled on foot into a wooded area before entering a property in the area of the community of Christiana, outside of Murfreesboro, Emmett said.
The inmates allegedly went to another home to try to steal a vehicle there, but an armed homeowner detained the suspects until the authorities arrived, officials said. Fortunately, the authorities received a great deal of help from the armed homeowners who were able to hold the inmates at gunpoint before they could further increase the danger of their presence in the area.
Officials said that Rowe and Dubose overpowered and killed Sgt. Christopher Monica and Sgt. Curtis Billue on Tuesday on a bus that carried 33 prisoners southeast of Atlanta.
The FBI announced a tip line and said pictures of the men and information about a $130,000 reward would appear on billboards in multiple states.
"They just murdered two corrections officers in a brutal fashion", Sills said. Billue, 58, a 10-year employee, is survived by his father, brother and sister, Georgia Department of Corrections Commissioner Greg Dozier said.
"I can not tell you how grateful I was to see them arrive", Hale said.
Dubose and Rowe then ran from the vehicle into a wooded area along the interstate.
Traffic will be diverted on Interstate 24 east in Rutherford County until about 11pm while police process the scene, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation said.
A myriad of federal, state and local law enforcement agents had been scouring the state and the country for Rowe and Dubose, both serving sentences that don't allow for parole. They then ate beef stew the woman had made and stole the man's boots, watches and other valuables, before leaving the home in a Jeep, the sheriff said.
They drove into adjacent Bedford County, where authorities said they abandoned the vehicle then forced their way into a couple's home and tied them up.
CNN reports that Dubose and Rowe allegedly stole numerous cars after escaping.
Authorities confirmed Thursday that two men who were arrested earlier in the day in Tennessee after tying up and robbing a couple there were the two Georgia escapees who were wanted for killing two Georgia corrections officers. "I feel for (Georgia Sheriff Howard Sills) because of what he's going through with his department", said Fitzhugh.
On Tuesday morning, a nationwide manhunt for two Georgia convicts was set in motion after the prisoners murdered two guards before escaping from the compound. The two inmates had killed two correctional officers during the escape, according to Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Sometime that night, a Ford F-250 was stolen in Morgan County. On Thursday, authorities got what first seemed to be a break - a trucker said two men matching the descriptions of the two escapees were spotted in Switzerland, S.C., at a rest area near Interstate 95 mile marker 17 around midday. Monica had worked for the facility for almost eight years after being hired in October of 2009. "We will do everything in our power to support their loved ones, and we will not forget their sacrifice and service".
