The gunman who wounded five people at the congressional baseball practice on Wednesday only opened fire after learning that the men on the field were Republicans. He ran a home inspection business until past year, when he lost his license.
"For some of the newer members they might think this is a brand new experience that Capitol Police and our local police are dealing with, but it's not", she said.
"I am sickened by this despicable act", Sanders said Wednesday. Zack Barth, an aide to Rep. Roger Williams (R-Texas), was shot in the calf. "I also want to thank the Capitol Police for their heroic actions to prevent further harm", he said.
Mika, a former congressional staffer, is a lobbyist for Tyson Foods.
Those who knew him around Belleville have said nothing suggested he was capable of the attack on members of Congress, in spite of his often stated, very strong, and well-documented anti-Republican views.
Hodgkinson had taken his van to the mechanic who works two blocks from the scene of the attack. He always drank alone, and always drank cans of Budweiser - sometimes just one, sometimes as many as six, said Kristina Scrimshaw, a bartender at the restaurant. "I'm glad they took care that he didn't get to do it again", Schaumleffel said. And he was just as politically active online as he was in person.
Sue Hodgkinson expressed her profound regret: "I'm sorry that he did this".
His brother Michael told The New York Times: "I know he wasn't happy with the way things were going, the election results and stuff".
She said Hodgkinson made preparations for leaving, selling nearly everything he owned from his businesses before the trip.
Hodgkinson was a Democrat and supporter of the presidential campaign of Sen. Bernie Sanders in 2016.
Investigators were looking into why Hodgkinson came to the Washington, D.C. area in the first place, and how much premeditation was involved.
Federal Bureau of Investigation agents escorted a few people from the Hodgkinson home.
Officials also said he had a history of run-ins with the law, including arrests for battery and drunken driving.
While trying to drive away from that confrontation, the report said, Hodgkinson used a pocket knife to cut a seat belt.
In a December 28, 2011 letter, Hodgkinson wrote: "There's a new version of what GOP stands for".
Schaumleffel reported hearing about 50 shots. "I had a staff member who was in his vehicle maybe 20 yards behind the shooter, who was pinned in his auto, who back in Georgia carries a 9-millimeter in his vehicle".
When Hodgkinson refused to stop, Schaumleffel called the sheriff's department.
Hodgkinson was armed with a 7.62-caliber rifle and a 9-mm handgun.
The deputy cautioned Hodgkinson about shooting around homes, given that the rounds can travel up to a mile.
Vermont Senator Patrick Leahy also responded to Wednesday morning's shooting via twitter, "Our prayers with all the injured".
