Jordan Spieth claimed the Travelers Championship on Sunday from TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut, defeating Daniel Berger in a playoff which he won with a birdie on the first extra hole. He putts just fine and shoots 64 to move up 43 spots to T-17 at 6 under.
At 23 years, 333 days, Spieth is the second-youngest golfer since World War II with 10 tour wins - Woods was 23 years, 186 days - and the second fastest to hit the benchmark.
Spieth helped quiet a cheering crowd as Berger had a long putt from off the green to extend the playoff but Berger could not match Spieth s stunning feat and the celebration began in earnest moments later.
Johnson Wagner and Brett Stegmaier were a stroke behind Spieth after day one but both Americans followed 64s with 72s to slip out of strong positions.
With his victory, Spieth has claimed 10 PGA Tour victories. "I was in there in regulation, knew it was the place to be". From 225 into this hole I was happy with where it was.
"We played great. The putter let me down today, but all in all this is a huge victory for us", Spieth said.
"I jumped up and saw it (ball) coming right down on the pin", he said of his final shot.
The crowds were massive, the weather was ideal, and there was electric in the air as Jordan Spieth and Daniel Berger headed into a Sudden Death playoff. Woods won 15 tournaments before he turned 24. In fact, that kind of shot was necessary because Spieth's normally reliable putter was taunting and tormenting him all day.
For the record, Spieth closed in 70 to finish at 12-under 268 and hold onto his one-shot 54-hole lead.
"What an amphitheater", Spieth said. "I give a lot of credit to Michael".
"That was fun. I don't know how many or if I'll ever have a moment equivalent to that again". "I played great. I mean, I'm here to win tournaments". I felt so uneasy on the greens. "I feel very fortunate for that", Spieth said.
"This is one of the best courses on tour", he said. "Took it easy for a couple days". Spieth accomplished that with a par on 18 to finish at 12-under. She had her lowest score on the LPGA Tour and matched her professional best set in the 2012 Australian Ladies Masters.
A few minutes earlier, Spieth had a similar shot out of the bunker than he chipped a few feet away from the hole for par and force a playoff. It bounced twice and rolled right into the cup.
Jordan Spieth finished on top of the leaderboard for the third consecutive day at the Travelers Championship.
"My biggest role is getting him to believe in himself", said Greller, a former sixth-grade math teacher.
"My ball staying up on 13, and then the one staying up on 15, that definitely if the rough weren't grown out the way it was this year, it would have been in the water".
"That can be stressful but you'd rather have that than be grinding to make the cut".
Berger hit his drive on the playoff hole left and into the crowd behind a fairway bunker.
