Iranian media has highlighted the missile attack as a success and the first by Iran outside its own territory in 30 years, since the Iran-Iraq war of 1980-88.
BEIRUT, June 19 (Reuters) - Russia, Iran and the United States are drawing new red lines for each other in Syria, with Moscow warning Washington on Monday it would treat any US -led coalition planes in its area of operations as potential targets after the USA air force downed a Syrian jet.
"The missile strikes of the Islamic Republic amounted to a direct response to US President Trump who had threatened Iran with war and isolation just recently", he said.
He added that the strike demonstrates that all Iranians unanimously agree that the USA is leading terrorists and acts of terror.
The retaliation "was just a wake-up warning to those who still can not or have not managed to decently comprehend the realities of the region and their own limits", he said.
Iranian forces and militants affiliated with Hezbollah, which is backed by Tehran, have launched several strikes on USA -backed forces in Syria in recent weeks, amplifying a growing proxy war between the United States and Iran that threatens to ignite the larger region.
Israeli security officials said Monday that they were studying the missile strike to see what they could learn about its accuracy and capabilities.
The advance brought the Bir Qassab area under the control of government forces, it said, quoting a military source.
Daraa-based activist Ahmad al-Masalmeh says fighting is now underway in the city.
Daraa is where the March 2011 uprising against the Assad family's four-decade rule began.
The US military said it had shot down an armed, Iranian-made drone that had been bearing down on its forces near a garrison in Syria's south-east on Tuesday, in the latest sign of increasingly frequent confrontation with Damascus and its allies.
The attacks left 17 people dead and more than 40 others wounded.
USA forces said on Tuesday they had shot down an armed "pro-Syrian regime" drone near the garrison.
But he warned that Iraq "should not trust" the United States, which is leading a coalition fighting IS in Iraq and neighbouring Syria.
US military officials said that they shot down the drone after it fired.
Since the civil war started in Syria, Iran has been involved.
Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency, General Sharif pointed to the IRGC's missile attacks against terrorists in Deir ez-Zor on Sunday night, saying that during the operation codenamed "Laylat al-Qadr" the IRGC fired six mid-range ballistic missiles at various targets, within a range of 650 to 700 kilometers.
