Just ask Trump's own nominee for Federal Bureau of Investigation director, who testified under oath Wednesday that special counsel Robert Mueller's probe isn't a witch hunt and that Russian Federation interfered in our democracy.
Special counsel Robert Mueller and congressional investigators are now probing whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russian Federation to help him win the 2016 election. "And honestly I think the press made a very big deal out of something really a lot of people would do", President Trump said.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell did the same on Tuesday.
Goldstone: Emin just called and asked me to contact you with something very interesting.
A complaint already has been filed before the U.S. Federal Election Commission by Democratic lawmakers alleging that the meeting violated U.S. election laws, while several committees of Congress are seeking further information about the meeting to determine whether it validated allegations that Russian Federation meddled in the presidential election.
Trump Jr., along with several White House officials, has repeatedly denied any collusion with anyone tied to the Russian government.
In Wednesday's interview, Trump also said he directly asked Russian President Vladimir Putin if he was involved in what US intelligence says was Russian meddling in the presidential campaign and that Putin had insisted he was not.
Senators questioning Christopher Wray, the president's nominee to lead the FBI, in a Wednesday hearing must demand that he detail any conversation he had with Trump administration officials and commit to cooperating fully with special counsel Robert Mueller in his investigation of the Trump-Russia connections. Any ethical operative confronted by a foreign power's attempt to meddle in this way in US elections would refer the matter promptly to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
Separately, Trump suggested to reporters aboard Air Force One that he might have learned of the meeting earlier than the White House has said.
They gave him until 11 a.m.to offer a response. He said he was willing to subpoena him if he refused to testify.
Democrats were predictably furious. In that initial statement, Trump Jr. portrayed the meeting as an opportunity to talk about a Russian adoption program.
"For months, the President has denied the validity of the investigation and said there is no basis for all the attention devoted to the Russian Federation story".
But the Democrats have little leverage. Bill Flores, a Bryan Republican, called on President Trump to eject his children from the White House in light of continuing revelations over their activities in the 2016 presidential campaign.
The better argument would be for Mr. Trump to have claimed that Mr. Putin's real agenda is to sow dissent and distrust in the USA and other western democracies. "I consider it a Biblical miracle that he's there".
Mr. Sekulow said the President was not being investigated by former FBI Director Robert Mueller, the special counsel investigating the Trump campaign and its interaction with Russian Federation during the election.
In an interview before departing Wednesday evening for France, Trump told Reuters that he didn't know about the meeting "until a couple of days ago when I heard about this". Trump Jr.'s meeting, with emails explicitly outlining that the Russian government was aiming to help his father, arguably provide some of the most clear possible links yet. But he added, "there's no reason to jump to conclusions here".
"I didn't know if there was any credibility, I didn't know if there was anything behind it, I can't vouch for the information".
Trump's view is at odds with U.S. intelligence assessments.
Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., who ran against Trump in the election, was characteristically blunter.
"I said, did you do it?"
