Both coaches won the SEC Championship once during their career's at Auburn.
The Tigers' shortcomings at quarterback - particularly at backup to repeatedly injured Sean White - left Auburn wanting the past two seasons.
Missouri coach Barry Odom echoed the commissioner's sentiment during his appearance at SEC Media Days on Wednesday. "I think we've got more returning starters than we've had the last 12 years at Auburn, and in this league there is nothing like experience". "We're going to let both those guys compete".
"P$3 robably the biggest thing that's standing out to me about this team, that they're hungry", he said at the end of his opening statements. "They had that edge, they had that confidence, and I think we've got a chance to be really good on defense".
In 2010, Cam Newton led Auburn to a National Championship with Gus Malzahn serving as his offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
"When we went on that six-game winning streak, we felt like we had a chance to do something special previous year (but) we weren't able to do that", he said.
"We've got two of the better quarterbacks", Malzahn said. "He sees that we have that chip on our shoulder and that we're not settling for anything". Any player would take a season like that especially when you should still be a senior in high school and while he enjoyed it, Bentley says there's still a long way to go. "He's going to provide more balance for us".
Newton was sacked 36 times and hit a total of 93 times last season.
Baylor transfer Jarrett Stidham raised Tiger expectations with his offensive MVP showing in Auburn's spring game.
"There's so many intangibles that go into being the guy", Stidham said after the A-Day spring game. He's really done a good job trying to win over his teammates and his work ethic.
"It's not been on any agenda item that I know of". And really the last time I felt this was 2013. "The exciting thing for me is we've got depth at quarterback, and that's been our Achilles' heel the last two years". It's an encore performance at media days for Carlson, who - at a quick count - is one of fewer than five kickers to appear since media days began in 1989.
During Malzahn's press conference at SEC Media Days on Thursday, he said there are some similarities between the 2017 Tigers and the 2013 squad - the team that pulled off the impressive "Kick Six" upset of Alabama.
"This team has high expectations, and their goal is to win the SEC, and to do that you've got to beat Alabama", Malzahn said. Along with a Week 2 trip to face defending national champion Clemson, Auburn will have to face LSU, Texas A&M and Arkansas on the road in a span of four weeks. But you can't. We've got to be responsible for the areas which we were deficient in, that we didn't either react or act properly, or whether it was staff or whether it was boosters. "We're a run first team but it won't be as lopsided as it's been in the past".
