"The Emiratis and the Saudis have been so firm against Qatar, and now the ground has been cut from beneath their feet", Simon Henderson, director of the Gulf and Energy Policy Program at The Washington Institute, told me, while noting that he's waiting for more articles to corroborate the Washington Post report.
Saudi Arabia and its allies imposed sanctions on Doha on June 5, including closing its only land border, denying Qatar access to their airspace and ordering their citizens back from the emirate.
A CNN report titled, "US suspects Russian hackers planted fake news behind Qatar crisis", citing anonymous United States officials, claimed that intelligence gathered as part of an FBI investigation into the hack indicated that unnamed Russian hackers could be behind the intrusion.
The false reports said that the emir, among other things, had called Iran an "Islamic power" and praised Hamas.
The Post said officials became aware of the UAE's role in the hack after newly analyzed information gathered by members of the USA intelligence community revealed senior members of UAE's government discussed the plans and how to implement the attack.

On Sunday, The Washington Post cited anonymous United States intelligence officials who claim to have evidence that UAE leaders were behind the breach which occurred at the end of May.
"We need to be certain that Qatar, a state with $300 billion in reserves, is no longer an official or unofficial sponsor of jihadist and terrorist causes", he said, giving no further detail on the proposed monitoring.
But he gave no impression that the UAE was willing to abandon the blockade. Inciting violence, encouraging radicalization, and undermining the stability of its neighbors, ' he said. They then broke relations with Qatar and declared a trade and diplomatic boycott, sending the region into a political and diplomatic tailspin that Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has warned could undermine USA counterterrorism efforts against the Islamic State.
The UAE's government has denied any involvement in the hacking but the allegations from a respected newspaper with impeccable intelligence sources spell trouble for the coalition against Qatar.
Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry said Qatar's response to the bloc's conditions had "no substance" and "reflects a lack of understanding of the gravity of the situation". The three-month Qatar interbank offered rate has jumped more than 50 basis points since early June.
