Overwatch has been an objective-based shooter since its launch previous year, but that hasn't kept fans asking for traditional deathmatch modes. For now, and as always, both modes remain in testing on the PTR and will be pushed to the live servers via an update whenever Blizzard is good and ready.
Two brand new game modes are coming to Overwatch's Arcade mode, and they're about as classic as you can imagine-Deathmatch and Team Deathmatch.
Kaplan did not give a date on when the deathmatch modes would be released to Overwatch other than "really soon". The new deathmatch modes will also include a brand-new map important to Widowmaker's in-game history.
In order to facilitate Deathmatch, Blizzard has modified several Hybrid, Escort, and Assault maps.
Additionally, many new maps were added into the PTR for the Deathmatch game mode, with smaller versions of the existing map pool as well as Black Forest, Chateau, and more. The top half of best-performing players will get a win credit.
In Team Deathmatch, two teams of four players face off until one team scores 30 points. Plus, the aforementioned Château Guillard has not only been teased as having "great gameplay" thanks to lots of "jump pads" and "open areas" for Pharah to use for flight, and "tight Reaper corridors", but also its story and artwork is engaging as well, for it was originally home to Amélie Lacroix (AKA Widowmaker). Kaplan didn't go into details on what customization options will be available but did mention the Blizzard team behind Overwatch wants to expand the number of options to match the deathmatch modes so players can come up with their own variants.
It seems likely that this new build will take a while to test and will likely launch sometime after the end of the Overwatch Summer Games.
