After beginning his front-office career in the WHL and AHL, Murray became head coach of the Washington Capitals in 1981-82, where he stayed until 1989-90. Bryan's contributions to the game of hockey were outstanding, from his impact in Washington to his more recent service as a senior hockey advisor with the Ottawa Senators. He also served as GM for the Red Wings, Panthers, Ducks and Senators.
Murray led the Ottawa Senators to a Stanley Cup Final appearance the year after in 2006-07.
The Red Wings organization would like to extend its deepest condolences to the Ottawa Senators organization and all of Murray's family and friends during this most hard time.
After stints as coach, general manager or both in Detroit, Florida and Anaheim, Murray took over behind the bench in Ottawa for the 2005-06 season.
"He is a top 10 coach, a top 10 GM and he could have been a top 10 talent evaluator if that's the role he had have wanted to take, except that he loved coaching so much", Tim Murray, who was sacked by the Sabres in April, said.
"Let's go to extra overtime and keep playing like the game we played against the Islanders many years ago and we went to four overtime periods", Murray said at the time. Murray had been battling with colon cancer for the past two and a half years.
On January 24, Murray was inducted into the Senators Ring of Honour; he's also a member of the organization's Hall of Fame.
Said Sens owner Eugene Melnyk: "Bryan was one of the greatest men that the game of hockey has ever known and also a great father, mentor and teacher".
Murray is surived by his wife, Geri, and daughters Heide and Brittany.
"We have high profiles", Murray said at a 2015 dinner held in his honor.
Ironically, it was Getzlaf and Perry as promising second-year players that would help deny Murray a Cup in 2007 when the Ducks won in five games with the personable, competitive coach behind the Senators bench.
David Poile, the former Washington and current Nashville general manager, said Murray's teaching background made him a natural for coaching. But Bryan's legacy goes far beyond his success on the ice, including his courageous fight with cancer and countless contributions to the communities he served. "He will be forever remembered by all he touched".
The Capitals had not been to the playoffs in their first eight years of existence before making seven consecutive postseason trips under Murray.
The recipient of the trophée Jack-Adams in 1984 amounted to $ 620 wins as a chief instructor in the National Hockey League, but has never won the Stanley Cup.
The Red Wings released a statement saying the organization was "saddened" by Murray's death while offering condolences to his family and friends.
