In both games, shaders allow players to change the color of the armor and clothing of their characters within the game. In the original, shaders were permanent items you could swap in and out of gear to alter its appearance.
Following the anger of players over Destiny 2's switch to one-time-use consumable shaders for armor, the game's director Luke Smith has clarified the adjustment in the gameplay mechanic. Encoded engrams, once the bane of every player's existence thanks to their unreliable drop-rates, now tell you what power level the gear they contain will drop at.
