Syracuse has been the furthest of their minor league affiliates in recent years, but, compared with the Mets' affiliation with Las Vegas, the distance is manageable to shuttle players back and forth from the majors to Class AAA. Flights last for over five hours, and by the time the minor leaguer comes to NY, that first day is essentially wasted. For four years, the Mets top farm team was located in Buffalo, much closer than their current top affiliate. The Chiefs would become the Mets' Triple-A affiliate in 2019.
According to a club release, the transaction still requires approval by the stockholders of the Community Baseball Club of Central New York, as they still hold the lease to the stadium.
Shareholders will have until November 17 to cast their votes, according to the governor's office. The deal ensures that the team will continue to play at NBT Bank Stadium in Syracuse through at least 2025, according to Gov. Cuomo's office.
Syracuse is now an affiliate of the Nationals.
An industry source confirmed Monday the Mets' plans to buy the minor-league team in Syracuse and move their Triple-A affiliate there from Las Vegas. The team has faced issues with its Class AAA team being based in Las Vegas since it's tough to summon players. The Brooklyn Cyclones are the Mets' short season class A affiliate in the New York-Penn League.
The move also hurts the rival Nationals since they will have to find a new home for their Class AAA team, and options are limited. In fact, in the press conference introducing the team Governor Andrew Cuomo made a point in doubling down on that point and calling the Mets an "all NY state" team. "That's what the Mets are all about".
