A number of Delhi Congress workers converged at Connaught Place on Wednesday evening to protest against the "tussle between state and centre governments" over Metro fare hike.
With the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) protesting against the Delhi Metro fare hike, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday said that it is Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's usual way of lying to the public by coming up with names such as "Satyagraha".
"During the 10-year rule of the Congress-led UPA Government at the Centre, the Metro fares were hiked only twice". The fares were last revised in May this year.
"In some cases, the fare difference between Metro and shared cab rides would be minimal but people may not mind paying a bit more for cab rides", Bhardwaj told IANS.
Maken said the week-long Delhi Congress campaign at various metro stations across Delhi will thoroughly expose the Kejriwal government on the metro fare hike. "Earlier, when college-goers used to travel [more] by bus, there used to be a bus pass; so why can't we have the same for Delhi Metro, considering it's the preferred mode of transport for most of us now", says Anisha Joneja, third-year student at Indraprastha College for Women, Delhi University. Some students say that while a hike of Rs 10 per ride may not be too much, would that lead to better services? "The fare hike will further congest Delhi and increase pollution", Rai added. "A trip cost that me Rs 25 before May costs me Rs 50 now". And it will be headed by the Chief Minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal who recently said that they are ready to pay half of the funds to DMRC and asks not to increase the fare.
A group called Delhi Metro Commuters Association has called for gheraos of BJP legislators. A two-week slugfest had ensued between the AAP, DMRC and the central government regarding the hike, with the DMRC clarifying that it "cannot interfere in the decision made by the 4th Fare Fixation Committee". "BJP and AAP should stop politics and save the Metro", he said.
It will continue on Thursday and on Friday at 12 noon, when the party workers will lay siege to Union Urban Development Ministry housed in New Delhi's Nirman Bhavan, thye party said.
