Rumored yesterday, and then teased via social media hours later, the revamped Movies Anywhere app is expected to launch "any time", per a representative for the studios, with details officially released just minutes ago. It has support from 5 major Hollywood studios, but more importantly also from 4 digital retailers where users already have movie libraries.
Disney's Movies Anywhere digital library service is expanding. Content from Amazon Video, Google Play, iTunes, and Vudu can be brought into the Movies Anywhere app, which is great for anyone with a fragmented collection spanning more than one of those services.
Along with Disney (and its Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Lucasfilm marks), the service features films from Sony Pictures Entertainment (NYSE:SNE), 20th Century Fox (FOX, FOXA), Universal Pictures (NASDAQ:CMCSA) and Warner Bros. Consequently, the Keychest-powered system that Disney has been using since 2014 will now unlock movies from the said studios which amount to over 7300 titles along with previews and film extras from the studios behind such hits as Wonder Woman, Beauty and the Beast, Spider-Man: Homecoming, War for the Planet of the Apes and The Fate of the Furious. Now, you'll only ever need to use one app again.
As of this writing, the Movies Anywhere site is still in a holding pattern, featuring an animation and the hashtag #AnywhereIsComing. It is similar to Ultraviolet, but will allegedly work more seamlessly and has the capacity of bringing together more studios and online retailers.
Paramount is the last remaining major studio that is not a part of Movies Anywhere.
Movies Anywhere today announced a limited-time offer to receive up to five digital movies.
Once you've linked your libraries to Movies Anywhere, you can access them on any of your devices.
The initial push will be for people to link accounts with the service, to push it, Disney is giving users who link their accounts access to Ghostbusters (2016) and Ice Age, and if they link a second retailer they will get access to Big Hero 6, Jason Bourne and The Lego Movie as well.
