It said more than 65,000 South Carolinians have already done this. Those with the noncompliant licenses will eventually need additional documentation - such as a passport, permanent resident card or military ID - to board domestic commercial flights and for other federal purposes.
The United States Department of Homeland Security has granted South Carolina's request for an extension to become REAL ID compliant.
Minnesotans can continue to use their driver's licenses for federal purposes such as boarding airplanes and accessing federal facilities now until January 22, 2018.
The extension runs for a year until October of 2018. It was passed after the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks to strengthen rules for identification needed at airports and federal facilities.
Once South Carolina is certified compliant, residents will have until September 30, 2020, to change their current license or another identification card to a REAL ID if you are interested in doing so.
"Focus now shifts to the troubled MNLARS system to ensure the implementation of the Real ID law moves forward and a Real ID is in the hand of any Minnesotan who wants one", Rep. Dennis Smith, R-Maple Grove, said. The previous extension recently expired, although the state remained covered under a temporary grace period.
"The bottom line is you can use your current Minnesota driver's license to board an airplane for a domestic flight or to enter a federal facility".
Montana residents will have the option of choosing a Real ID compliant identification. "After a bipartisan effort last session to pass REAL ID compliance in our state, finally Minnesotans can travel worry free".
"You will have time to change your current card to a REAL ID, but you're encouraged to begin the process now by bringing all required documents to an SCDMV branch", said REAL ID Project Manager Melissa Cisson in a press release.
