During Syria's more than six-year-old conflict, Israel has returned fire across the border, including stray shells from fighting among Syrian combatants.
Syrian sources said that: "Israel is instructing the rebels to fire on its own territory in order to justify attacking us as a response".
"Early this morning, 5 projectiles were launched at the N Golan Heights from Syria".
The Israeli military targeted three artillery cannon inside Syrian territory on Saturday, saying that it was in response to five projectiles landing on Israeli-held territory in the Golan Heights.
"The IDF will not tolerate any attempt to harm the sovereignty of the State of Israel and the security of its residents, and considers the Syrian regime responsible for what is happening in its territory", the army said.
Syrian news agency SANA quoted the statement from the Syrian army, which went on to add that "the Israeli enemy attacked this morning one of our posts and caused damages". Syria filed a complaint with the secretary of the United Nations over the incident.
It also acknowledges carrying out dozens of air strikes against Hezbollah forces in Syria to stop what it calls advanced arms deliveries to the Lebanese Shiite militant group, which is a key ally of the Damascus government.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned Russia's President Vladimir Putin in August that Iran was seeking to establish a permanent military presence in Syria, and flagged a possible Israeli military response to such moves.
Both warring Syrian sides accused each other of prompting the Israeli attack on Saturday.
Channel 2 News reported that the IDF stated this recent incident was spillover fire from hostilities between the Syrian army and rebels.
