Today I think I finished with a result like a victory, doing more than maybe what the auto was able to do.
Massa has raced more than 250 times in F1 and initially retired at the end of last season. The vehicle is showing great performance lately and I think that is coming from the chassis development.
Massa also received a wonderful message from his son, Felipinho, after he crossed the finish line.
"Thank you for everything that we passed together, for all the support".
"Even if pulling off an overtake might have been tricky, given the limitations of our package, that did nothing to deter him, and I'm sure he could have made it happen given a handful more laps".
The two former Ferrari teammates sparred from there, Massa holding off Alonso for the bulk of the rest of the race despite Alonso's Honda-powered McLaren appearing to have better balance and pace in the infield section.
"Renault is the best engine company in the past 15 or 20 years if you see all the world championships so l don't think we should be too anxious", he said. It will be very hard to defend those positions but, as we saw in Mexico, I will not give up. "That was very costly for my race because I spent the whole afternoon trying to recover".
"I did everything in a ideal way from the beginning to the end, fighting with a guy that I have been fighting a lot in my career", Massa stated.
Last year's race in Brazil saw Massa, in what was originally supposed to be his final home race, crash out at the half-way point before bidding farewell in a tear-filled walk down the pit lane.
"Today was definitely like a victory and to finish the race and feel the emotion of the people after such an fantastic race. Today I finished the race like I wanted".
"I have now enjoyed four great years with the team, but my career in Formula 1 will finally come to an end this season".
"It was a race that I will never forget".
"That's quite a good direction that we took and in Australia next year we will be a completely different team and we are looking forward".
