The 30-year-old leads the current La Liga scoring charts with 12 goals, while Lazio's Ciro Immobile and Paris Saint-Germain's Edinson Cavani are frontrunners in the European Golden Shoe race, having netted 15 times so far.
Messi collected the prize from last year's victor - Barca team-mate Luis Suarez, who finished fifth this time round.
