Mississippi State QB Nick Fitzgerald got hurt during the first quarter of the Egg Bowl on Thursday night, suffering a horrific leg injury. Brown needed 68 yards to set the Ole Miss receiving yards record on November 23. I think they'll be pretty excited about this game. It's not another game.
"Usually, I'm always making sure we have a great, exciting environment, and making sure and encouraging our fans to show up and create that home-field advantage for us", Mullen said. "To the people of the state of MS, this is bragging rights".
"That's what makes rivalry games so fun and what makes college football so special". Nick Fitzgerald first experienced the game on his official visit in 2013 when Dak Prescott led the Bulldogs to an overtime win.
The star quarterback had 1,770 yards passing, 968 yards rushing and 29 total touchdowns this season.
"It's a rivalry game. I had to try not to eat too much, so I'm just going to wait until I get home after the game (today) and pig out".
"For myself, I'll take a (conservative) approach", Rankin said.
Early in the 2017 Egg Bowl matchup with the Ole Miss Rebels, the Bulldogs quarterback was wrapped up while running out of the pocket and twisted awkwardly to the ground. There's animosity and nastiness.
"I don't want to belittle it ... it's still the biggest game of the year, but we've also elevated our program", Mullen said.
"When you play rivalry games, records, last year's game, what happened the year before or two years before, none of that really holds a lot of weight for this one", Mullen said. After needling the Rebels for the first three years with his "School up North" tag, he rarely uses the term anymore.
Mullen took the Bulldogs to No. 1 in the country in 2014 and has had them inside the top 20 more often than not in his career in Starkville.
AN EVEN SERIES: The Egg Bowl has been an extremely close rivalry over the past three decades with both Ole Miss and Mississippi State winning 15 games.
Ole Miss will also be playing its third game in 12 days, but one of those was a relatively easy non-conference victory over Louisiana-Lafayette. "We're trying to compete for championships in the SEC and national championships as a program".
