The 190-crore movie is directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali who has denied reports that the movie suggests a romance between Rajput warrior queen Padmini and Alauddin Khilji, the Delhi sultan who was obsessed with her beauty. "The panel has asked Mr Bhansali and Mr Joshi to appear before it and present their views on the movie".
The bench which also comprised Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud termed as "misconceived", the prayers sought by Sharma in his fresh petition and said that the court can not pre-judge a movie which is yet to be certified by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Viacom 18 submitted the new application yesterday, they said.
Padmavati has been banned in five states in India, but the Supreme Court on Tuesday, while dismissing another petition to stop the release of the movie outside of India, advised the Chief Ministers to refrain from commenting on the movie as it will create a prejudice against it.
The filmmakers have submitted three applications, including the latest 3D one, to the Censor Board.
Many historians are unconvinced that Padmavati actually existed. The first was returned because there was no disclaimer.
The original release date of the movie was December 1 but due to the controversy, the makers have deferred it indefinitely. Our clock has stopped now, we are just waiting and waiting. "If the court cannot pre-judge (a film), we are surprised how anybody else can pre-judge the film under the law", Justice Misra observed. They will restart our plan once the movie will get the certificate. It also said that the authority to certify and clear the movie rests only with CBFC.
The period drama starring Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh and Shahid Kapoor has been facing protests from various communal groups, including Shree Rajput Karni Sena, for allegedly tampering historical facts.
The Supreme Court made the observations after ministers of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh have demanded that Padmavati be banned or not released until changes are made.
