Target announced a number of new mobile app features back in September, and said this one was on the way.
USA discount store chain Target has become the latest retailer to embrace mobile payments with the introduction of a mobile wallet within its app. Wallet uses a barcode scanned at check out that includes payment and applicable coupons.
One big benefit is faster in-store checkout-up to four times faster than other payment types, in fact.
In a press release, Target explained that its new Wallet allows for customers to pay and rake in discounts with Cartwheel all in a single transaction. Wallet is now restricted to Target's REDcard credit card and debit card. And, coming soon, guests also will be able to store and redeem Target GiftCards with Wallet. According to the company, the feature will also allow customers to keep Cartwheel offers, Weekly Ad coupons and payment options in the same app.
Where Wallet does have a leg-up on Apple Pay is its integration with Cartwheel.
Both Target and Walmart are retailers who are part of CurrentC - a group of retailers with their own mobile payment solution. However, Walmart allows customers to make payments on Apple and Android devices with nearly all major credit, debit, and pre-paid cards or Walmart gift cards. "These "open the app, find the pay tab, and scan" services will be slower unless they find a way to skip steps and match the speed of NFC". To use Wallet for in-store payment, you must be a Red Card holder - whether it be the debit or credit version - and download the Target app from the App Store.
