Hallyday had been battling lung cancer, the Guardian reported.
French President Emmanuel Macron's office said early Wednesday,"He brought a part of America into our national pantheon". My man is no longer with us.
Johnny Hallyday, a legendary French singer and actor, died after a battle with cancer.
"I'm very sad to hear the news that Johnny Hallyday passed away".
"Across generations, he carved himself into the lives of French people", Mr Macron said.
Known as the "French Elvis", he popularized rock and roll by covering hit songs by American stars such as Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochrane and of course, Elvis.Читайте также: Christine Keeler, Ex-Showgirl At Centre Of Profumo Scandal, Dies Aged 75
He released his first album Hello! Dubbed the "French Elvis", Hallyday became a hero to France's youth with his music, his style and attitude in the 1950s and 60s much in the same way Elvis Presley, a huge influence of his, had done in the U.S. Johnny in 1960. The following year while performing at the first rock festival at the Palais des Sports in Paris, he set off a near-riot that led to a ban on rock "n" roll shows for several months.
Hallyday's 2001 concert at the Eiffel Tower drew a crowd as large as 600,000.
Apart from being a singer, Hallyday also acted in several films, his first which starred him as an extra, "Les Diaboliques", in Georges-Henri Clouzot's classic thriller in 1955.
The French have simply called him "Our Johnny".
"The rock "n" roll attitude which he brought from the US made him an idol to youth of the sixties", Macron's office said.При любом использовании материалов сайта и дочерних проектов, гиперссылка на обязательна.
