"What I think is when things aren't going well, you're trying to find ways to make it better, and at times frustration sets in, " Chiefs coach Andy Reid said during a conference call Monday. Sometimes things don't go exactly how you want, but you persevere, you stand for the things you believe in and you maintain good character, you continue to work and that's what we've done up front.
He wasn't. Peters returned to the sideline before the end of the game. "I always talk to the person first", Reid said. "You have to go out and get it every week". That's not the way I roll with these things.
Peters did not appear in the locker room following Sunday's game. He even garnered a few interviews previous year and it only seems a matter of time until someone finally pulls the trigger on asking one of the best special teams coaches in the game to lead a team on his own. In 2011, it was wide receiver DeSean Jackson who got a one-game suspension after being late to team meetings. With both teams tied at 6-6, the importance of this game speaks for itself. The school dismissed Peters later in the season for disciplinary issues. Peters had been flagged for unsportsman-like conduct but was not ejected.
After Reid announced he was mulling over punishment for Peters, the point was delivered clearly on Wednesday incidental behavior would no longer be tolerated. He did not re-enter the game.
"I'm going to leave all that stuff with Marcus and I", Reid said. "I'm not making it any more than that". "That's where I'm at".
Quarterback Alex Smith said he officially learned of the suspension Wednesday morning. "When good things don't happen, it's important to control yourself". "It gets to people and it's a tough situation". I haven't made any decisions yet.
During a road win over Houston the next week, Peters was caught cursing out defensive coordinator Bob Sutton on the sideline, forcing linebacker Justin Houston to intervene. "That's the positive. That's how I feel, and you bank on that".
A recent ESPN story listing the top head coaching candidates for this coming offseason only listed a single Chiefs coach, Dave Toub, and it was at the very bottom, among other honorable mentions-a way to cram in a few other names on the list.
"These are hard fought games", Smith said. "Guys will handle it". When asked about the situation, Reid stated, "This was something Marcus [Peters] and I discussed". Kansas City plays the Oakland Raiders at home this Sunday and the victor will likely be atop of the AFC West.
"I think he's done a nice job for us", Del Rio said.
"Coach made a decision and we're going with it", Smith said.
