The Vols have offered Alabama defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt its head coaching position, Knoxville, Tenn., radio station WNML reported Wednesday night. According to reports, Tennessee offered Alabama's defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt the job earlier Wednesday.
Georgia defensive coordinator Mel Tucker, who also would be expected to have College Football Playoff duties with the Bulldogs who meet Oklahoma in the Rose Bowl, has emerged as the Tennessee's other top choice with Auburn defensive coordinator Kevin Steele rounding out the trio.
Friday, the school hired former football coach Phil Fulmer to take Currie's place as athletic director after Fulmer was reportedly attempting to exert influence on Currie's coaching search.
In his one season at Florida State, Pruitt's defense was first in the nation in scoring defense (10.7 points per game), third in the nation in total defense (248.2 yards per game), second in the nation in passing defense and lead college football with 26 interceptions.
Currie fired former UT head coach Butch Jones 25 days ago, and nothing went right.
"He can relate to anybody, and you see that with the way guys have bought into new roles, and guys have been able to move around and play different spots", Anderson said a year ago.
Saban is the best coach in college football, and even he relies on the deepest pool of assistant coaches in the country. "There ain't no holding back". Less than a week after having the full-time job, Fulmer appears to have his coach.
Assuming Pruitt surrounds himself with strong assistants, he should make a strong foray into head coaching at Tennessee.
It's looking more and more like Tennessee may finally have their head coach.
The Vols' search became major news after the job was given to (and then rescinded from) Greg Schiano. A deal fell apart, though, when fans, the media and even Tennessee politicians reacted negatively to the choice, with some citing Schiano's tenuous links to the Jerry Sandusky scandal at Penn State.
If the parties don't hit an unexpected snag, Fulmer has done in six days what former AD John Currie failed miserably at since firing former coach Butch Jones on November 12 after a humiliating 50-17 loss at Missouri.
The 43-year-old is widely recognized as an excellent recruiter and was a Broyles Award finalist in 2016.
Although Pruitt isn't the home-run hire some Vols fans will have wanted, he should have Tennessee headed in the right direction in 2018.
