"There will be a time when, once Supreme Court clears it, we would like to give a date by which all have to link with Aadhaar and remaining will be cancelled". So far, private citizens run the risk of being locked out of access to their own bank accounts if they do not link them with Aadhaar by December 31. Recently, it was also reported that the mobile connections not linked to Aadhaar card will get deactivated.
The Centre on Thursday informed the Supreme Court that it was willing to extend till 31 March next year the deadline fixed for mandatory linking of Aadhaar for availing various services and welfare schemes.
The government has made it mandatory for verifying bank account and PAN to weed out black money and bring unaccounted wealth to book.
There are also a number of other benefits of linking your mobile phone number with your Aadhaar. The new deadline will be March 31 instead of December 31, and a notification for this will be issued tomorrow, the court was told.
Bank account: According to the available information, the deadline for the banks to link the account of the customer with their Aadhaar is December 31, 2017.
The apex court had, in October, said that a Constitution Bench would commence hearing on the clutch of petitions against Aadhaar scheme from the last week of November. On June 1, 2017, PML Rules have been amended to make Aadhaar mandatory for linking all bank accounts, insurance, pension, mutual funds and DMAT accounts.
Earlier this year, the government made it mandatory to link Aadhaar card to SIM card.
As the case is pending in the Supreme Court, the government is not enforcing the provision, the official said. To begin with, one can e-verify their income tax return using their Aadhaar once it's linked it to the SIM card.
