The idea? a whole new "Star Wars" trilogy, nothing to do with the Skywalkers and Grandpa Vader's grandkid, that'd roll out after the current trilogy - the one with the Skywalkers and Grandpa Vader's kid - comes to its conclusion in a couple of years.
"The appeal of it to me is to do a new story told over three movies, to have that kind of canvas, to be in the Star Wars world and to have the feel of a Star Wars film", he said.
"The fans are just incredible", actor Mark Hamill said. You can see the faux audition tape down below.
The "Star Wars" universe has already been expanded on the big screen away from the main movies with "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" and the upcoming Han Solo spin-off.
With the premiere of Star Wars: The Last Jedi nearing it's time to really take a closer look at how the First Order will turn things around and gain the advantage in the fight against General Leia and the Resistance.
Despite the title, the new movie will be all about the new characters, as the official plot synopsis explains: "In Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the Skywalker saga continues as the heroes of The Force Awakens join the galactic legends in an epic adventure that unlocks age-old mysteries of the Force and shocking revelations of the past".
Written and directed by Rian Johnson, the film stars Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Lupita Nyong'o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, Kelly Marie Tran, Laura Dern and Benicio del Toro.
The video below features Hamill explaining how "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" is no longer all about Luke, even as fans may think it that way.
