Govt committed towards development of Northeast: PM Modi

The Prime Minister is on a visit to Mizoram and Meghalaya ahead of elections in both the states next year.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached out to voters in Mizoram and Meghalaya on Saturday and urged them to embrace development by throwing out Congress governments, kicking off his party's campaign in four northeastern states that go to the polls next year.
Modi, who travelled nearly 30,000 kilometers during the recently concluded Gujarat election campaign, and party president Amit Shah have focused on the seven northeastern states, where the BJP has traditionally been a fringe player. "Government of India has sanctioned around Rs One hundred crores for development of tourist destinations in the State".

"The high literacy rate, scenic beauty and availability of large English-speaking population in Mizoram make for a flawless blend to develop the state as a model tourist destination", said the Prime Minister. The other is social sector projects of education and health. He also said that he was the only prime minister after Morarji Desai who has taken part in a meeting of the North Eastern Council.

He also said the central schemes for the benefit of the north-east had gained momentum and that his government was committed to developing the region.
He also pointed out his government has sanctioned rail and road projects worth Rs. 79000 crore for the North East. The Union Government has sanctioned over 3800 kilometers of National Highway with an investment of Rupees 32000 crore during last three years, out of which almost 1200 kilometers of road has already been constructed. "It can emerge as a key transit point for trade with Myanmar and Bangladesh", he said. This project will improve connectivity and further economic growth. We want to make Meghalaya a top tourism destination.
