Sorvino also retweeted it, adding: "Just seeing this after I awoke, I burst out crying". "There it is, confirmation that Harvey Weinstein derailed my career, something I suspected but was unsure".
Almost 20 years later, we read about the sexual misconduct allegations being made against Harvey Weinstein and we saw comments by both Mira and Ashley, who felt they had been blacklisted by Miramax after rejecting Harvey's sexual advances. The film originally was slated to be a Miramax picture, but Jackson and Weinstein had a falling out over the number of installments Jackson meant to make, so he took his project to New Line.
The Oscar-winning director concluded by saying, "We have no direct evidence linking Ashley and Mira's allegations to our Lord of the Rings casting conversations of 20 years ago - but we stand by what we were told by Miramax when we raised both of their names, and we are recounting it accurately".
Weinstein's alleged blacklisting led to both of the actresses missing out on roles in Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" films because of negative things the brothers had said about them, according to the report.
"At the time, we had no reason to question what these guys were telling us - but in hindsight, I realize that this was very likely the Miramax smear campaign in full swing".
Peter's statement goes on to state that after the actresses came forward to allege that Weinstein "blacklisted" them after they rejected his "sexual advances", he felt the need to speak out about his own experience when trying to hire the two stars. Thank you, Peter Jackson, for being honest.
The rebuttal clarifies the fact by saying, "Fran Walsh was in the same meeting, and remembers these negative comments about Ashley and Mira as clearly as I do".
But in a statement from representatives of Weinstein, it was claimed the producer had nothing to do with the casting of the movie, as by the time actors were hired, the project had been picked up by New Line.
"He at that point gets me more tightly and says, 'For what reason don't we go outside and discuss this.' That was all I expected to hear".
"Mr. Weinstein denies speaking with Terry regarding casting".
The director was eager for them to be involved in the Miramax production but said that Weinstein put a stop to it. "When Christopher Backus received a better offer, Mr. Weinstein allowed him to amicably break his contact to peruse the opportunity".
"'I'm not running anyplace with you, ' I said as I drove him back and punched him with a correct hand to his face", Priestley composed.
