Gautam Gambhir has had a few run-ins with Delhis cricket establishment in the last two years but back in the state as captain of Delhi Daredevils, the batsman is hoping that playing in a "peaceful environment" will bring the best out of him.
Gambhir was picked by the Delhi outfit for Rs 2.8 crore in this year's auction after being released by KKR. "To get this responsibility is a way for me to give back to the sport in the city", Gambhir was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz. But above all, he is a leader, so this appointment was an easy choice. "I haven't had it in last couple of years", he observed.
Gambhir began his IPL career with Delhi Daredevils before leaving the Kolkata franchise in 2011. "I will try and play with absolute honesty and integrity and with a lot of passion and energy as well", the Southpaw batsman said. The potential of this group of players is huge and it is now up to us to turn that potential into consistent performances.
"I play for winning, not for a comeback".
"Though I am the captain of Kolkata Knight Riders, and would want them to win it for the third time, but since I'm a Delhi boy too, I obviously want Delhi Daredevils to do well as well". You can only try and lead by example. He added, "The captain has is as good as his team".
"It's not about price tag as it's not in players' hand". And this year is no different. "He has always proven himself to be one of the top leaders during his stint with other sides in the IPL". "If you play the IPL thinking about using it as a launchpad or a platform from where you can stage a comeback, then you can never succeed", Gambhir said. The latter has never been the case with me and never will.
The Delhi Daredevils is scheduled to open its campaign against Kings XI, Punjab, at the Ferozeshah Kotla ground on April 8.
