Karti was arrested on February 28 at the Chennai airport on his return from the United Kingdom, in connection with the FIR lodged on May 15 a year ago alleging irregularities in the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) clearance to INX Media for receiving overseas funds to the tune of about Rs 305 crore in 2007 when his father was the Union finance minister.
Karti's father P Chidambaram was also present in the courtroom during the hearing today. He also invoked the death of biscuit baron Rajan Pillai in 1995 and said that he did not want to be exposed to attacks. However, the judge directed Tihar Jail authorities to provide and ensure proper safety and security to Karti during the judicial custody.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in its plea to the court, claimed that there was enough material to implicate Karti in the case, adding that he had been non-cooperative during questioning.
The investigation agency did not press for any further police custody but moved an application for a fifteen day judicial custody while Karti moved an application seeking separate prison cell during judicial custody.
Extending Karti Chidambaram's custody, the court told the CBI to confront him with the Chartered Accountant at Tihar Jail.
"In view of the fact that no more police custody remand of accused is sought by CBI, accused Karti Chidambaram is remanded to judicial custody".
The counsel had sought a separate cell for Karti Chidambaram while citing possible threats from "terrorists" lodged at Tihar jail during P Chidambaram's stint as home minister. We are outraged with the CBI stand on Karti's plea.
The court, however, allowed Karti to carry spectacles and medicines as per prescription subject to examination and approval by the jail doctor, but denied his request to carry toiletries, books, clothes and home food.
Earlier on March 10, the Delhi High Court restrained the Enforcement Directorate (ED) from arresting Karti Chidambaram till March 20.
The matter will now come up for hearing on March 24.
Karti was arrested on his return from the United Kingdom in connection with the FIR lodged on May 15 past year.
After confirming that she had paid a bribe to Karti Chidambaram in the INX Media case, Indrani Mukerjea has now agreed to identify the location too.
