The wheelchair-bound skiers appeared at the same temporary stadium in Pyeongchang, about 50 kilometres (30 miles) from the heavily fortified inter-Korean border, where Kim Jong-un's sister attended the opening of last month's Winter Olympics.
There was also a positive reaction when one athlete from North Korea and one from South Korea held the Paralympic flame aloft together before handing it over to start a relay which culminated with a South Korean single-leg amputee abseiling up a ski slope before the cauldron was lit.
It was the Slovakian's sixth Paralympic gold in vision impaired skiing.
Unlike at the recent Winter Olympics, South Korea and North Korea marched separately, after failing to resolve differences about the nature of the proposed Korean unification flag.
The doping scandal that ensnared Russian Federation then has persisted, however, with only members of its delegation whom the International Paralympic Committee considered clean of any doping history permitted to compete here under a neutral flag.
Canada has won 135 Winter Paralympics medals, including 43 gold, since the inaugural Games in Sweden in 1976.
It is the second consecutive Paralympic Games with no Russian team, with the country also excluded from the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio.
"Great stories, great achievements, great drama", International Paralympic Committee president Andrew Parson told the audience, who sat through three-degree temperatures.
Just like the recent Olympics also in Pyeongchang, two issues dominate: Russian Federation and North Korea. South Korea is hosting the Games for the first time.
Paralympians are an eclectic bunch, ranging from a 61-year-old Japanese ice hockey goaltender to a Mexican who found unlikely success as a mono-skier.
North Korea had wanted to use a version of the Korean peninsula flag that includes islands disputed with Japan.
"Since our first formal agreement signed in 2000, the Paralympic Games and the movement as a whole has grown beyond all recognition", he said.
The International Paralympic Committee announced that the neighboring nations would have their own entourages on Thursday - just a day before the opening ceremony.
The rapid inter-Korean thaw has eased tensions that soared previous year when Pyongyang tested missiles that could reach the United States mainland and detonated what it said was an H-bomb.
