The Manchester United boss made the remarks today during his pre-Champions League news conference, in which he was joined by Michael Carrick (video embedded below). He had seven matches, seven defeats [sic], zero goals.
"But if you go to his numbers and how many matches he played with me last season and this I would say probably he's in the top five players with more matches in the two seasons".
"But if he was coached by Frank he would lose because he lost every game".
Jose Mourinho has been in such a good mood this week he's returned to the jovial banter merchant we all know and love. Of course, with Marcus, I have to be honest and give the credit to the people in the academy who were responsible for his formation; I have to leave credit to Louis van Gaal, who was responsible for his first season in the first team.
He incurred the United manager's wrath by telling BT Sport that it's "a pity" Marcus Rashford plays under Mourinho after the England worldwide marked his first league start of the year with both goals against Liverpool. But Mourinho is not like that.
De Boer, who lost his job after five games and 77 days in charge of Crystal Palace, suggested that the pressure on Mourinho to get results is hampering Rashford's progress.
"In these types of games, when the pressure is on you, you just be yourself and I think that's what seems to happen in these games and the team seems to react well, when maybe we don't react as well in other games", said the 20-year-old. Rashford is Manchester-born, supports United and Reds fans see him as one of their own, another continuation of the club's proud tradition of giving young players a chance.
"If Mourinho continues to insist on Rashford and Lingard remaining on the bench then they should leave United. The best thing that can happen to a kid is to have experiences and Marcus is having them".
"When you are in the last 16 it looks really, really far, but when a team gets in the last eight you start smelling the semi-finals".
The Frenchman was absent during the part of Monday's training session observed by the media, but Mourinho said Pogba joined the workout after that and has not been completely ruled out. "There comes a time, whether you like it or you don't like it, that your body tells you it is time to stop playing football", he said.
"There's a lot of things I'm learning".
