While Brees leaving the comfort of Sean Payton's offense is still unlikely, the Saints are playing a risky game by letting it get to this point. When asked again at the Pro Bowl where he would be playing next season, the quarterback said bluntly, "the New Orleans Saints". However, the fact that Brees remains unsigned and that no concrete reports of progress on negotiations have surfaced provides a glimmer of chance that he is wearing a different uniform in 2018.
The Vikings have mostly been linked to Kirk Cousins, but obviously Brees would be a huge upgrade over Cousins, and likely would command a shorter contract. "I didn't think this was going to last through my first August, let alone 12 years".
These teams offer just as strong of a chance to win, so if I were Brees, I'd be keeping my options open. Coach Sean Payton and G.M. Mickey Loomis have expressed similar confidence. Can I get a WHO DAT! That's how it always has gone with Brees' extensions with the Saints (when he signed days before the franchise-tag deadline in 2012 and days before the regular season started in 2016).
Brees has also played against the Vikings in two of the franchise's most memorable games - the 2009 NFC Championship game, which the Saints won in overtime after a late Brett Favre interception, and, of course, the Minneapolis Miracle. However, the Saints have around $33 million available. That's not to say the Saints don't offer a favorable situation - they do - but Brees would be a great fit in Denver or Minnesota for that matter.
The benefit of getting this done sooner than later should be too obvious for that to happen. But New Orleans's window to retain Brees is shrinking by the minute with apparently a lot of work to be done. It isn't time to panic or to become anxious - that moment won't arrive until Wednesday if it arrives at all - but you can hear the clock now.
