The Denver Broncos don't appear to be landing Kirk Cousins after all.
After stepping in as starting QB for the Minnesota Vikings in Week 2 of the 2017 season, Keenum led the team to a 13-3 record, including a trip to the NFC Championship game where they lost to the eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles.
The Broncos are coming off a 5-11 season that included quarterbacks Trevor Siemian, Paxton Lynch and Brock Osweiler at starter. And the team did pick up the $4 million on Demaryius Thomas' contract, as John Elway said he would do two weeks ago at the NFL Combine. Having a quarterback that can help us become a more efficient offense and help us score more points and not turn the ball over, that can only help us get better.
"I still think that we're not too far away", Elway said earlier in the offseason. "Obviously, we have to get better at that (quarterback) position", general manager John Elway said at the National Football League combine.
Keenum, 30, brings playoff experience, strong leadership, and lingering questions about whether last season was the start of a career renaissance or an aberration. That doesn't all go on the players.
"There were some things we should have done differently that we didn't do".
Klis also reported that while the Broncos did have at least one negotiation with Cousins, the team did not make a "serious run" at the former Redskins quarterback and they focused their efforts on Keenum. "But I feel like we can get right back in the thick of things pretty quickly".
