"Conventional construction methods have many baked-in drawbacks and problems that we've taken for granted for so long that we forgot how to imagine any alternative", says Jason Ballard, co-founder of ICON.
The cost: Right now, a house built using the firm's Vulcan 3-D printer costs $10,000. To combat this deficiency, an Austin-based startup has proposed a solution of developing a house by using low-priced 3D printing.
ICON hopes to create sustainable and quality homes accessible to everyone in partnership with housing solutions nonprofit New Story. Their 100% model ensures that every penny of each donation goes to build homes while organization overhead and R&D is covered by private donors such as Y Combinator, prominent venture capitalists, and other leading executives.
As The Verge reported, startup ICON has built an affordable 3D printer that can print out the components of a small house in only 12 to 24 hours.
A report from the World Resources Institute estimated that 1.2 billion people now live in cities without affordable or secure housing.
"(ICON) believes, as do I, that 3D printing is going to be a method for all kinds of housing", New Story co-founder Alexandria Lafci said.
The concrete is laid out in 100 strands that are about one inch thick and hold their shape as they harden. A few Pakistani new companies and business visionaries have led the pack on presenting 3D-printed innovation in different scenes at the nation over. However, by working alongside ICON, they now have access to the impressive Vulcan 3D printer.
With 3D printing emerging throughout the construction industry, the technology is becoming a groundbreaking production tool for affordable and sustainable housing.
New Story will also train locals in construction and use locally sourced materials.
The company hopes to commercialize its house-printing technology in the United States in the long run, where housing shortages are reaching alarming levels in some larger cities.
Even though the machinery used in 3D-printing is quite costly, however, the materials can be affordable. In homes, at the moment small 3D printers can be used to create toys for children.
