Deccan Herald has it that - Defending champion Roger Federer equalled his best start to a season with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Chung Hyeon to book his spot in the semifinals of the Indian Wells Masters on Thursday.
He began by winning the last four games of the second set, a streak that included his first break, for 4-4. With this win, Roger recorded his best ever start to a calendar year after his win on Borna Coric in Indian Wells.
Del Potro took the first set in Indian Wells thanks to a break of serve in the fifth game of the match.
In 2017, Federer won the title by defeating Ston Wawrinka by 6-4, 7-5. Federer has won 17 straight matches on hard court.
Del Potro saved three match points before closing out victory in two hours 42 minutes. Juan Martin del Potro and Milos Raonic have endured all of them in recent years. In the quarterfinals, No. 37 Philipp Kohlschreiber effectively used his drop shot to throw off Del Potro, who had to again come from behind to earn the victory.
These two have played 24 times and Federer has won 18 of those meetings.
"I love to play against him", Del Potro said. "I can not believe I won this tournament, beating Roger in a great final and level of tennis".
Prediction: Federer is brimming with confidence.
"We both know what the other is trying to do and we try to stop the other person from doing it", Federer said.
Federer is 18-6 lifetime against Del Potro, having rallied to win the last two contests in three sets, including a 6-7 (5/7), 6-4, 6-3 victory in the championship game past year in Federer's hometown of Basel.
Federer had been searching for a record sixth title in California, but it was Del Potro who powered to his first ATP Masters 1000 title.
In the second set, Federer and Isner stayed on serve through the first six games, making it appear as if another tiebreak was on the way. "And when you're thinking you can play offense all the time and then [Coric] catches you off-guard and you have to go back into defense, I felt like maybe in the beginning it wasn't happening naturally".
Although Coric's resolve remained and he broke again to lead 4-3, a double-fault allowed Federer to promptly level matters.
"I just want to enjoy this moment, it's so big for me", del Potro said. "So I think there have been a lot of things that have contributed to me feeling comfortable here". "And here now I'm relieved that I was able to win three matches already".
The result was a 0-40 opportunity for the Argentine in the third game, which del Potro took full advantage of by securing a rare love break of the Raonic serve with a forehand victor. For Del Potro, reaching the semis is another feather in the cap of his comeback from injuries as he is back in the top 10 for the first time since 2014.
