Protesters gather for dog who died on United Airlines flight

Local leaders and pets participated in a "dog-in" Saturday, March 17 at LaGuardia Airport, demanding justice for the dog who died on a United Airlines flight on March 12.

The protest consisted of animal rights activists, Kokito's family, and Marisol Alcantara, a democratic state senator in NY.

During the "dog-in", a legislation was unveiled to create a new Pet Passenger Bill of Rights called Kokito's Law.

The flight attendant in the United Airlines plane bound for NY from Houston said she did not realize that there was a pet in the carrier when she shoved it into the overhead bin. "We assume full responsibility for this tragedy and express our deepest condolences to the family and are committed to supporting them".

On Thursday, a United Airlines flight departing from New Jersey's Newark airport and destined for Akron, Ohio was forced to be rerouted mid-flight after the airline realized that a dog bound for Ohio was accidentally loaded onto a plane bound for St. Louis, Today reports. Although the dog's owner said Kokito was in the bag, the airline still insisted that the animal stay in an overhead bin. Alaska Airlines, which transported the next-highest number of animals (114,974), had an incident rate of 0.26, one-tenth the rate of United. "We provided compensation to all customers on board for the diversion".

The dog was dead when the flight landed. It would ban placing pets in overhead bins and make sure they have access to food and water.

Following Kokito's death, actress Olivia Munn told TMZ that she will never fly the airlines again. Schmerin said this animal was not on that list.
