He was unable to put any weight on his left leg afterwards, so it isn't surprising that he will be sidelined for a while.
"I was prepared like I normally [am]", Knebel said.
The news wasn't good and is likely to get worse for Knebel and the Brewers, as he was quickly placed on the Disabled List shortly after the game and will receive further testing on Friday in the form of an MRI to determine the full damage.
Barnes (0-1), who was filling in for injured closer Corey Knebel, was charged with four runs, two earned.
Manager Craig Counsell confirmed following Thursday's game that Knebel would be headed to the DL, so the move is not a surprise.
"We finally got to (Hendricks)", Counsell said.
The Brewers bullpen is 3-0 with a 2.01 ERA entering play Friday.
Knebel had 39 saves last season as the Brewers fell just short of the postseason.
As for Knebel, he had no issue with pitching in a non-save situation, as the Brewers determined he needed the work after not throwing for five days.
Knebel blew a save chance on Opening Day, struck out the side in getting a save at San Diego the following day, then didn't get in a game until Thursday.
"We were trying to give him an inning of work to keep him sharp", Counsell said. "We can only hope for the best right now".
"It really anxious me yesterday, but today I woke up and it felt a lot better", Knebel said before Friday's game against the Cubs.
Milwaukee recalled right-hander Adrian Houser from Class AA Biloxi. "But I think as we get further along in this somebody will probably claim most of the opportunities".
