He seeks Kratos' approval and wonders why his father now suddenly shows an interest in teaching him hunting.
The new game takes Kratos out of his familiar Greek pantheon stomping ground and places him in unfamiliar mythological territory: as a sojourner walking among Nordic legends.
Though he is able to escape his old life, he can not escape tragedy. Taking on the likes of Thor and Odin, God of War is a father-son bonding experience as players meet Kratos' son Atreus for the first time. Her last wishes were for the two to spread her ashes from the tallest peak, and thus the long and winding journey through a new world begins.
God of War is a big deal. Players feel like archeologists, learning more about the fiction with every foray into an unexplored corner of the map.
Keza MacDonald in The Guardian summed up God of War simply: "It is rare to play a game so accomplished in everything it sets out to do".
Gone are Kratos' signature double-chained blades, replaced with a magical battle axe called the Leviathan Axe, which can be infused with elemental abilities and lobbed at enemies.
Since the review embargo lifted overnight, critics have been praising the game's stronger emphasis on character development and its new combat system.
In combat, your axe fits around Dark Souls-style blocks, dodges and parries.
Despite being a god, Kratos had his butt whipped on multiple occasions during my playthrough, as some encounters require you to be almost ideal with your timing.
One of the difficulty levels that will be included in the upcoming PS4 game is known as "Give Me q Story", and according to the game's engineering lead, Jeet Shroff, this will allow players to "experience the story without too much of a hard gameplay challenge". Santa Monica has had the courage to overturn the playful foundations of the series, creating an epic action-adventure: a sparkling reboot for our war god. Even scary creatures have their own charm, making me hesitant to actually kill them with the gruesome finishing moves. The gameplay changes and bold decision to delve into another protagonist pay off in big ways and together, with Sony Santa Monica's award-worthy sound design, musical score, and mastery of console visuals help make 2018's God of War game something that fans old and new will easily love. Strength, luck, defense, vitality - these attributes will all rise and fall as you upgrade weapons or socket new runes into your armor. With sprawling vistas, screen-filling bosses, and visceral combat, you will want every pixel of processing power available to you to enjoy God of War in its fullest glory. The result is frenetic, especially when combined with special "runic" attacks that might freeze everyone in your vicinity or see you diving shield-first into a wall of enemies.
There's much more on the road ahead, and God of War is very good at sinking its hooks in deep from the outset. God of War is very much a fantasy of fatherhood, then, but it is one with likeable characters and a surprisingly tender heart. Somehow, the studio has turned Kratos into a sympathetic character without erasing his past.
Of course, there's still the chance that it'll be knocked off its pedestal as there are still future reviews needed to be added to Metacritic, but even if the scores do lower God of War's score, it can't be denied that this is a PS4 exclusive fans would be silly to miss out on.
