A huge crowd has gathered for the march, led by Rahul Gandhi, against the alleged rapes of minor girls in Unnao, Uttar Pradesh, and Kathua, Jammu and Kashmir, where slogans were raised against the Narendra Modi government. The parents of Jyoti Singh, known as Nirbhaya, who died after being brutally gangraped in the national capital in 2012 were also present for the demonstration.
Priyanka Vadra's husband Robert Vadra was also present in the protest march to the India Gate. Rahul said that he was joined by members of several other parties and common men and women in the midnight protests.
The police had a hard time controlling the crowd (some of them were even drunk) as many had crossed over the barricades and even broke through them. "We are standing here against that and we want the government to act", he said.
He said there were repeated incidents of violence, rape and murder of women in the country.
"Today, India's women are afraid of coming out in public". Women should at least feel safe- Rahul Gandhi at the candlelight march against Kathua & Unnao cases. Prime Minister had given a slogan "Beti Padhao, Beti Bachao" (Save the Daughter, Teach the Daughter) and it is during his regime that our girls are being raped.
Announcing the march, Gandhi had tweeted in the evening, "Like millions of Indians my heart hurts tonight".
"Join me in a silent, peaceful, candlelight vigil at India Gate at midnight tonight to protest this violence and demand justice", he said. Although Rahul Gandhi himself did not mention elections, Congress party acolytes are relishing the prospect that some of the outpouring of support from Thursday night may linger until 2019.
Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad said they were protesting to awaken the Modi government from its "slumber".
Taking to Twitter on Thursday, he asked how anyone could protect the perpetrators of such evil.
The protest lasted almost two hours. India simply can not continue to treat its women the way it does. With the crowds making a rush towards Congress leaders, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra looked a bit miffed with their behaviour.
