Alderson described the 24-year-old Nido as "an exceptional defensive catcher", while Lobaton - who tripled in his first Mets at-bat - has been around the block a few times as a serviceable backup over eight seasons with San Diego, Tampa and Washington, even if neither player provides the offensive punch potentially of d'Arnaud or Plawecki.
New York Mets catcher Travis d'Arnaud will undergo Tommy John surgery on his injured right elbow. "I just couldn't believe it, but what can you do?"
Because of the location of the tear, d'Arnaud said it was unlikely to heal without surgery.
In four games this season, d'Arnaud hit.200 with one home run and three RBIs.
His return date will be determined by the return of grip strength and pain tolerance. "It's only a couple of weeks out of a very long season".
"I'd like to think the opportunity isn't going away", Plawecki said.
NY said before Friday's game against Milwaukee that Plawecki was being put on the 10-day DL, retroactive to Thursday. Lobaton is batting eighth against right-hander Zach Davies. He was with the Mets during spring training and had been waiting for an opportunity.
Callaway wouldn't commit to making Lobaton or Nido the regular starter. During the Mets' 2015 World Series season, he broke his right hand after being hit by a pitch, missing 46 games.
