They came into the year with high expectations but are already 45 points shy of Ferrari in the World Constructors' Championship standings after a miserable trip to Bahrain saw both Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo retire within the first couple of laps.
"I don't know if we can challenge, we're half a second behind today", added Hamilton.
"It shakes everything up and the two Red Bulls were bold enough to pit for tyres".
"I could see him struggling on the tyres and tried to brake late into the corner".
"I appreciate the fact that he came to me straight away". So that was of course my fault.
"It's not what you want and it's easy to say afterwards I should have waited", he said. Mercedes lacked performance - Hamilton was 0.58secs off pole and fourth behind team-mate Valtteri Bottas.
While Verstappen doesn't believe he needs to necessarily ditch his aggressive approach to passing, he is going to analyse the mistakes he made during the Chinese GP. I didn't want to compromise my race to the guys behind. "I wouldn't be surprised if tomorrow that gap disappears and it will be a tight race". "That probably would have been the best idea but unfortunately that happened".
Raikkonen, who had looked the strongest of the pair all weekend, was on provisional pole when the chequered flag fell in qualifying, but a last minute effort from Vettel put the four-time champion ahead by just 0.087s.
When asked how he felt his pace was compared to Vettel before the Safety Car was deployed, Bottas said: "It felt like everything was under control and I had no major drop off in the end".

"Inside the auto judgements are very hard to make", Vettel told Sky F1. But you ultimately you have to have these things in mind and make sure you don't crash.
We are still at the beginning of the 2018 F1 season.
"The race was going pretty well for us and we were looking strong all the way, until the guys, during the Safety Car, stopped and we were in trouble then with Daniel and almost with Kimi [Raikkonen] in the end", Bottas said.
