In a tweet, Stalin expressed shock over the Professor Nirmala Devi attempting to lure girl students to a wrong path and said it deserved to be strongly condemned. "She is heard telling the student that they may decide on informing their parents about the plan".
"If Ms. Nirmala Devi's claims (about university officials) are true, then it has to be brought out at whose behest she was acting and who are those "very powerful" people she is talking about", he said.
The Madurai Kamaraj University has withdrawn its five-member probe committee after Governor Banwarilal Purohit, who is also the Chancellor of the University, announced an investigation by a former bureaucrat yesterday. Addressing the pupil on the other end as "kanna", she says that till now, under teacher-students relationship, she has supported them academically.
On Monday following a protest by student groups the teacher, a mother of two grown up children, was arrested on charges of trafficking and Information Technology Act. In the audio clipping, Nirmala Devi could be heard advising her pupils, over phone, about the opportunity awaiting them. "If we receive a complaint on the incident, I will direct the university Registrar to file a police complaint".
When the girls tell her not to talk about this again, Nirmala Devi seeks an assurance from them that they will not reveal the conversation to anyone. The college is affiliated to the Madurai Kamaraj University. "I am hearing about such an incident only now from you".
It is said that the police had to storm their way in as the accused Nirmala Devi locked herself up after police came about to arrest her.
"Dating takes social courage and we need to teach our young people the virtue of social courage", Cronin said in a statement. But the lecturer, who has been suspended by the college after a preliminary inquiry, denied any sexual connotation and said she had given the advice "in the right spirit".
Senior AIADMK leader and Minister D Jayakumar assured severe punishment under the law for the professor for luring the students into flesh trade. DMK working president and CPI (M) state secretary K Balakrishnan sought a Madras High Court-monitored probe.
