Christopher Reeves, Hannity's real estate attorney, did not dispute the report in an email to The Guardian, describing Hannity's holdings as highly confidential. For some mortgages, Hannity obtained funding from HUD under the National Housing Act Loan Program, which refers to encouraging improvement in housing standards and conditions, to provide a system of mutual mortgage insurance which was first guaranteed under former President Barack Obama's administration. Last week, it emerged that Hannity was a client of Michael Cohen, President Donald Trump's personal lawyer, whose office was recently raided by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
The records link Hannity to a group of shell companies that spent at least $90m on more than 870 homes in seven states over the past decade.
Swaine noted that Hannity's investment strategy was "confirmed by thousands of pages of public records reviewed by the Guardian", but later in the article wrote, "A Hud source said Hannity was identified in non-public filings as the 100% owner of the apartment complexes".
He insisted that Cohen only briefly consulted on real estate matters.
"I doubt you would find it very surprising that most people prefer to keep their legal and personal financial issues private", Reeve told the newspaper.
Hannity's mortgages were replaced late last month with $22.9 million in loans that were rewritten with HUD and a new bank.
Hannity did not disclose that fact while interviewing and praising HUD Secretary Ben Carson on his primetime program previous year. "Mr Hannity is no different". "The LLC's are REAL companies that spend real investment money on real properties".
"I have occasionally had brief discussions with him about legal questions about which I wanted his input and perspective", Hannity said.
The 20 shell companies tied to Hannity were formed in Georgia and have been used to purchase properties in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, New York, North Carolina, Texas and Vermont.
Hannity failed to disclose his relationship with Cohen, despite using his show to promote the president and defend Cohen multiple times. "Michael knows real estate", he said a few hours after Cohen's Manhattan court appearance.
