Around 7 am, the van of Divine Public School, carrying almost 25 students, passed through the crossing and reportedly stalled on the tracks when it was hit by the train.
A total of 22 students were travelling in the Tata Magic School Van.
" A Tata Magic school van carrying school children collided with passenger train (55075) coming from Sivan to Gorakhpur at unmanned railway crossing number 45, around 7.30 am".
President Ram Nath Kovind also expressed his condolences on the horrific accident.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is rushing to the spot.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath condoled the death of schoolchildren and instructed the administration to arrange treatment for those affected by the accident.
Sanjay Yadav, CPRO, north eastern railways, said the van driver did not heed to repeated warnings of the gate mitra as he was running late in getting the children to school. An accident relief medical train has been sent from Gorakhpur to the site, he added. He also declared ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakhs for family of the deceased and also directed an inquiry into cause of accident.
According to the reports, there were eight children have been injured in the accident. I have asked senior officials to conduct a probe into the incident.
Earlier this month, more than 27 school children were reported dead after a bus ferrying them fall into a gorge in Himachal Pradesh's Kangra district.
One of the eyewitnesses told the media that the location where the incident took place usually has one staff of the railways in presence.
In his reaction Congres' Ashok Gehlot tweeted, "Deeply pained to know about the death of innocent children in a tragic road accident at an unmanned crossing in #UttarPradesh's #Kushinagar".
