A new poll conducted six weeks after Cynthia Nixon announced she was running for NY governor finds the actor and activist trailing two-time incumbent Andrew Cuomo by a wide margin in the Democratic primary.
They showed she earned about $1 million in gross wages a year ago for her work as an actor, with those payments routed through an S corporation known as the Fickle Mermaid Corp.
Meanwhile, a third candidate, Cynthia Nixon, has filed an extension and has not made any information available yet. When an array of expenses and other deductions were made, the adjusted income for federal tax purposes totaled almost $620,000. From that, Nixon paid herself $400,000. Nixon's wife, Christine Marinoni, left her job in New York City government this year. They made over $185,000 from the sale of a condo in Montauk, and claimed about $85,000 in depreciation from another rental unit.
Hours before Molinaro released his 2017 filings, Cuomo's campaign said the Republican candidate, who has held public office since he was a teenager, should release the past 10 years of his tax returns.
Of that, $15,000 went to the Public Policy and Education Fund, an affiliate of Citizen Action, a liberal organization that has endorsed Nixon.
"What we need is leadership on this issue", she said, according to Politico. "Only half the electorate knows her". "And the governor's impact on our funding from lots of other sources means that our endorsement decision is going to cost us a lot of money".
The couple also gave more than $44,000 to dozens of charitable organizations through a foundation they set up to distribute grants.
Cuomo leads 89 percent to 4 percent among Democrats; 47 percent to 27 percent among independent voters, 50 percent to 34 percent among men and 63 percent to 20 percent among women.
Cuomo's critics call the request curious since Cuomo, in 2010 when he was elected governor, did not release his tax returns until more than a month after the November elections. And he said past governors, including George Pataki and Eliot Spitzer, released multiple years of returns.
