The Department of Veterans' Affairs will receive an additional $111.9 million over four years beginning in 2018-19 "to continue to transform and improve veterans' services to more effectively and efficiently meet the current and future needs of veterans and their dependants", budget papers reveal.
However, only $22 billion will be returned in land transport infrastructure grant funding.
"The Government's neglect of live performance in this budget follows the upheaval of earlier budgets including the Catalyst fiasco".
Medical research has been given a boost with A$1.3 billion under the 21st Century Medical Industry Growth Plan for the progress of medical technology, biotechnology and pharmaceuticals while improving health outcomes for all Australians through investments in medical innovation.
The Budget also includes a $41 million space agency and investment program, $4.5 million in new measures to encourage girls and women to pursue STEM education and careers, and a $29.9 million research initiative on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning.
The government is continuing to invest in supercomputing, including upgrading two supercomputers with total funding of $140 million for the Pawsey Supercomputing Centre in Perth and the National Computational Infrastructure facility at the Australian National University.
Additionally, it also leads the information and communication technology strategy for the Austrailian Government.
Research across biomedtech programs will be bolstered by $94.3 million, which will be used to increase biomedical research and better integrate Australian researchers with the industry. This includes a digital identity program called Govpass, which received $92.4 million AUD in funding for the year.
As part of the DTA's 2018 - 2019 budget, the money will be allotted over the course of the next four years. Finally, the AAA wants the government to abolish the vehicle import tariff, stating that it costs consumers $1.3 billion extra each year, and the continued impost can not be justified without a home-grown manufacturing industry to protect.
"The small business entity turnover threshold has also been lifted from $2 million to $10 million, which has extended access to a range of small business tax concessions", the Budget read.
Launched in 2015 as a part of the Australian Government's wider digitization agenda, the Agency was initially set up to engage government agencies and help them undergo digital transformation.
