The president spoke with Mrs. Trump before the procedure and with her doctor afterward, the first lady's office said.
On Monday, May 14, we learned on NBC's Today that Melania Trump underwent a surgical procedure for a benign kidney health problem. "There are HIPAA laws to consider, but she also deserves personal privacy", the first lady's communications director, Stephanie Grisham, told CNN Tuesday when asked why the routine procedure would require a multi-day hospital stay. Vice President Mike Pence, however, described the procedure as "long planned" during a speech Monday night in Washington. They have a 12-year-old son named Barron.
"It's like literally an outpatient procedure", said Dr. Eleanor D. Lederer, a professor at the University of Louisville School of Medicine and past president of the American Society of Nephrology.
"[Renal artery embolization] is a minimally invasive, typically low-risk procedure performed by a radiologist, who inserts a catheter into the patient's arm or leg and cuts off blood flow to the area, causing the [affected area] to shut down". He said he expected the first lady back home at the White House before the end of the week. Trump also took to twitter to share the success of the operation. Trump has acknowledged reimbursing his lawyer for the payment to Stormy Daniels but denies her allegations.
Once she's out of the hospital and on the mend, Mrs. Trump will return to her busy schedule, working on promoting her recently-announced "Be Best" initiative. Separately, a former Playboy model has revived her allegations of a 10-month affair with Trump in 2006.
